Milday Chapter 11
Monomer Liquid and Polymer Powder
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| abrasive | a nail file or buffer |
| benzoyl peroxide (BPO) | used to start the chain reaction that leads to curing |
| chain reaction | a process that joins together monomers to create very long polymer chains |
| dappen dish | a small glass or plastic container that holds a minimal amount of product for one service use |
| fill, backfill | a two-to three-week maintenance service to fill in the area of new growth with new product as well as rebalance the shape of the nail and perform any repairs needed |
| grit | how many grains of sand are on the file per square inch |
| lifting | when artificial products lift up or pull away from the nail |
| liquid and powder nail enhancement | created by combining a monomer liquid mixed with polymer powder |
| mix ratio | the amount of monomer liquid and polymer powder used to create a bead |
| nail primer | used on the natural nail prior to product application to assist in adhesion |
| shiner | a buffer (usually 400/1000/4000) used to create a high shine on a natural enhancement |
| mono | one |
| mer | units |
| poly | many |
| inhibition layer | tacky layer |
| dry bead | equal amounts of liquid and powder are used to create the bead |
| wet bead | twice as much liquid as powder is used to create a bead |
| medium bead | contains one and a half more liquid than powder to create a bead |
| perfect bead | round shiny settle and not running |
| acid base | dry to a chalky white |
| non-acid base | dry to a shining sticky |
| coarse grit file | 100 grit or lower strong enough for artificial products |
| lifting | used when artificial products lift up or pull away from the nail |
| medium grit file | 150 grit to 180 grit initial shaping of the perimeter of the nail, refining the overall surface shape of a nail enhancement, or for smoothing the surface before buffing |
| fine grit file | 240 grit or higher refining and finish filing shape the free edge of a natural nail |
| buffer | removes the scratches in the surface of the nail the files have created |
| 3 types of nail brushes | kolinsky sable blend |
| the common brush used for monomer liquid and polymer powder | #8 oval brush |
| shapes of brushes | oval round square |
| where to stored liquid products | cool dark area away from the heat |
| what is odorless | no odor |
| what is low odor | slight odor |
| acrylic | monomer liquid and polymer powder mixed together |
| acrylics is used to make a wide range of things | contact lenses, mending broken bones, Plexiglas windows, makeup and more |
| methacrylate | the ingredients in 2-part monomer liquid and polymer powder enhancement systems |
| colors of monomer liquid and polymer powder | basic pink, white, clear, and natural |
| nail technicians should have a clear understanding of liquid and powder nail enhancements because | -popular services that will be frequently requested, and clients will expect expert service -lucrative services -to provide service safely for you and your client as well as give you the creative edge over your competition |
| ways monomer liquid and polymer powder can be used | -over the natural nail as a protective overlay -over a nail tip as a reinforcement -on a form to create a sculpture nail extension -create small works of art on top or inside a nail enhancement |
| MMA should not be used | -do not adhere well to the nail plate -creates the hardest and most rigid nail enhancement -difficult to remove -FDA says not to use it |
| types of monomer liquid | ethyl methacrylate methyl methacrylate odorless |
| industry standard monomer liquid | odorless ethyl methacrylate |
| who took a stance against the use of MMA liquid monomer | Nail Manufacturers Council American Beauty Association |
| catalysts | designed to speed up the chemical reactions |
| initiators | they are activated by catalyst, and will spring into action and cause monomer molecules to permanently link together into long polymer chains |
| how many colors does polymer powder | wide range of colors such as pink, whites, milky translucent shades, reds, blues, yellows, greens, purples, oranges, browns, and jet black |
| where do you place a nail form | under the free edge of the natural nail |
| a good rule of thumb | if you can see it now, you can see it later |
| how to remove the lifting of the nail enhancement | hold a 180 grit file against the lifted area and file it thin that the lifted piece flakes away |
| how to remove nail enhancement | fill bowl with acetone or product remover and soak the nails for 20 to 30 minutes |
