banishment the act of sending someone or something away from a place and not allowing them to come back
penitentiary a state or federal prison
to reprimand the act of telling somebody officially that they have done something wrong
death penalty the legal punishment of death for a crime
capital punishment punishment by death, as ordered by a legal system
confinement the situation in which a person or animal is kept somewhere, usually by force
imprisonment the act of putting someone in prison or the condition of being kept in prison
a heavy fines payment in large amounts
a suspend sentence a legal arrangement in which a person who has been found guilty of a crime is not sentenced to jail but may be sentenced for that crime at a future time if he or she commits another crime during a specified period.
a corporal punishment the physical punishment of people, especially of children, by hitting them
eviction the action of forcing someone to move out of a property
firing squad the act of shooting and killing a prisoner
life imprisonment the punishment of being put in prison for a very long time without an arranged time for release or, in the US, until death
lynching the act of killing someone without a legal trial, usually by hanging (= killing using a rope around the neck)
probation a period of time when a criminal must behave well and not commit any more crimes in order to avoid being sent to prison
solitary confinement a punishment in which someone is kept in a room alone, usually in a prison
community service work that people do without payment to help other people, and which people may sometimes be ordered to do as punishment for crimes that are not too serious
