banishment | the act of sending someone or something away from a place and not allowing them to come back |
penitentiary | a state or federal prison |
to reprimand | the act of telling somebody officially that they have done something wrong |
death penalty | the legal punishment of death for a crime |
capital punishment | punishment by death, as ordered by a legal system |
confinement | the situation in which a person or animal is kept somewhere, usually by force |
imprisonment | the act of putting someone in prison or the condition of being kept in prison |
a heavy fines | payment in large amounts |
a suspend sentence | a legal arrangement in which a person who has been found guilty of a crime is not sentenced to jail but may be sentenced for that crime at a future time if he or she commits another crime during a specified period. |
a corporal punishment | the physical punishment of people, especially of children, by hitting them |
eviction | the action of forcing someone to move out of a property |
firing squad | the act of shooting and killing a prisoner |
life imprisonment | the punishment of being put in prison for a very long time without an arranged time for release or, in the US, until death |
lynching | the act of killing someone without a legal trial, usually by hanging (= killing using a rope around the neck) |
probation | a period of time when a criminal must behave well and not commit any more crimes in order to avoid being sent to prison |
solitary confinement | a punishment in which someone is kept in a room alone, usually in a prison |
community service | work that people do without payment to help other people, and which people may sometimes be ordered to do as punishment for crimes that are not too serious |
