a solicitor a type of lawyer in Britain and Australia who is trained to prepare cases and give advice on legal subjects and can represent people in lower courts
convict someone who is in prison because they are guilty of a crime
culprit someone who has committed a crime or done something wrong
a prosecutor a legal official who accuses someone of committing a crime, especially in a law court
suspect a person believed to have committed a crime or done something wrong, or something believed to have caused something bad
to suspect to think or believe something to be true or probable
a witness a person who sees an event happening, especially a crime or an accident
felony (an example of) serious crime that can be punished by one or more years in prison
cross-examination the act of cross-examining (= asking detailed questions of) someone, especially a witness in a trial
to serve a sentence the act of spending an allotted amount of time in a designated location such as a prison as punishment for the crime committed
to serve on a jury to be part of a group that hears evidence in a trial and gives a verdict
petty offence not serious offence
a plaintiff someone who makes a legal complaint against someone else in court
attorney for defense a legal professional who provides counsel and representation to individuals or organizations accused of committing a crime or being sued in civil court
defendant a person in a law case who is accused of having done something illegal
bailiff an official who takes possession of someone's property when they cannot pay their debts
verdict an official decision made in a court at the end of a trial
to accuse to say that someone has done something morally wrong, illegal, or unkind
to bring lawsuit
to file a complaint the act of formally registering a grievance or objection against an individual, organization, or entity
to interrogate to ask someone a lot of questions for a long time in order to get information, sometimes using threats or violence
