a solicitor | a type of lawyer in Britain and Australia who is trained to prepare cases and give advice on legal subjects and can represent people in lower courts |
convict | someone who is in prison because they are guilty of a crime |
culprit | someone who has committed a crime or done something wrong |
a prosecutor | a legal official who accuses someone of committing a crime, especially in a law court |
suspect | a person believed to have committed a crime or done something wrong, or something believed to have caused something bad |
to suspect | to think or believe something to be true or probable |
a witness | a person who sees an event happening, especially a crime or an accident |
felony | (an example of) serious crime that can be punished by one or more years in prison |
cross-examination | the act of cross-examining (= asking detailed questions of) someone, especially a witness in a trial |
to serve a sentence | the act of spending an allotted amount of time in a designated location such as a prison as punishment for the crime committed |
to serve on a jury | to be part of a group that hears evidence in a trial and gives a verdict |

a plaintiff | someone who makes a legal complaint against someone else in court |

bailiff | an official who takes possession of someone's property when they cannot pay their debts |
verdict | an official decision made in a court at the end of a trial |
to accuse | to say that someone has done something morally wrong, illegal, or unkind |
