What happened to Moshe? He was taken to the very first concentration camp. he disappears for months.
What story did Moshe tell? That they were treated awfully, and they were using newborn babies as target practice
How had Moshe changed? He was quiet, and kept his head down. He gave up on trying to warn the people after they refused to believe him.
How did the Jews react to Moshes story? They shut him down numerous times.
Why did they refused to believe Moshe? Because they did not want to believe that something so heinous could happen, they were in denial
What political changes happened in Hungary in the spring of 1944? Jews were forced to wear yellow stars, give up their valuables, and also were forced to stay inside for a week.
What was the attitude of the Jews of Sighet? They made the very best of their situation, and enjoyed being alone with people of the same faith.
After the Germans arrived in Sighet, what was the prevailing attitude among the residents? They liked the Germans very much, they thought they were kind people.
After Passover, Wiesel says, "the curtain rose." What does this refer to? What happened? The Jews realize that the Germans are not at all who they thought they were, they see changes in the behavior in the Germans, seeming like they showed their true colours. The way that they were treated in the cattle car is what made the Jews realize.
What was bitterly ironic about the comments that Wiesel's father made regarding the wearing of the yellow stars? He said, "A yellow star? Oh, what about it? You won't die from it" Which is ironic because the yellow stars symbolized the peoples faith, which they were being murdered and tortured for.
How did the Jews react to being confined in the Ghetto? They were comfortable in the Ghetto at the start, because they were surrounded by people of the same belief and faith.
The Germans had other plans for the Jews of Sighet, what were they? They planned to torture them in concentration camps.
The Wiesel family was among the last to leave the large Ghetto. Where were they sent? To a concentration camp in Hungary

The men were then marched before Mr. Josef Mengele. What did he do? What was his purpose? When put in front of Mr. Mengele, The Jews were separated into walking the left or right path. One leaded to the factories where they would work for the rest of their lives, and the other leaded to a massive furnace where they would be burned alive.
What did Elie Wiesel witness while he was standing in line? What was his reaction to what he saw? Elie saw babies being thrown into the fire mercilessly. His reaction was disgust and fear.
When Elie realize that he and his father were going to be burned, what plan did he devise? His plan was to attempt to jump the fence and walk the other path.
What did Elie revolt against? Elie revolted against the Jews that were walking the same path as him when they said to have faith and remain calm.
List the things that Wiesel says he will never forget. He said he would never forget the very first night in the train, the smoke that poured from the fire, the children being burned alive, the fire that consumed his future, the silence, and when he lost faith.
This marked the end of Wiesels very first night in Auschwitz. What natural sign marked the start of the next day? What does Elie tell us of the change in himself? The morning star marked the beginning of a new day. Elie tells us that his soul had been consumed by a dark flame and that he was no longer the student of the Talmud.
Why did Elie berate himself so severely? Because he had allowed his father to be hit right in front of him and did not intervene.
What was Elie's first impression of Auschwitz? "this is better than Birkenau"
What was unusual about the prisoner in charge of the barracks? He was kind and polite. He treated them like real people and tried to make them feel a little better about their situation
The next day, the prisoners underwent the last step in their admission process. What was it? They got tattooed a number to help them be identified.
Who did Elie meet after several days at the camp? What does he ask the Wiesels? He meets Stein, he asked of his family.
How did some religious Jews see their situation? How did Elie feel about God? The religious Jews saw it as an opportunity to prove their faith. Elie states that he does not deny that God is real, but he doubted his absolute justice.
Finally, Elie and his father are taken out of the barracks. Where are they taken? They go to work in an electrical unit. It is described as not dangerous or difficult.
As a part of a medical examination, prisoners were examined by a dentist. What was he looking for? Gold teeth
Elie and his father were assigned to a work detail, what were they to do> what were the potential threats of this job? They were to work at a new electrical unit, the only threat is of the kapo, who tended to be hostile when angered.
How did Elie avoid having his tooth pulled? what happened to the dentist? what happened that one day at the factory? He claimed that he was sick. The dentist got publicly hanged, and Elie was approached by some man demanding his tooth.
Who cleaned the blood from Elie? what question did he ask her years later in Paris, and what was her reply? The young French girl cleaned the blood off of him and said kind words. He asked if she as Jewish, and she said yes.
What else did Idek do to the wiesels? He constantly berated Elies dad, and Elie took time out of his day to try and teach his father how to march to prevent the beatings
How did the foreman get revenge on Elie and his father for not giving up the gold tooth? How did Elie try to stop it? Was he successful? He would continuously beat Elies father, Elie tried to stop it by teaching his father to march, which was unsuccessful.
How did Idek punish Elie for spying on him? He whipped his back numerous times until he passed out in front of everyone.
Why were the prisoners happy about the air raid even thought they would have gotten killed by bombs? Because they wanted the place to be burned to the ground.
One day, prisoners were told that soup would be distributed after roll call, why was this? They were going to experience the very first hanging before they ate.
What other public execution does Wiesel write about? Why was this one different This execution was particularly cruel because it was the hanging of a child that had not died quickly.
Wiesel's description of himself as "ashes" is a figure of speech. Which one, and what does it mean? It is a metaphor for saying that he is burned out of his faith and hope and that he carries no real purpose in his life anymore.
During Yom Kippur, what did the prisoners debate? Whether or not they should fast.
The head of Elie's block gave some words of advice to the prisoners to improve their chances of survival. What did he say? He said to run like their lives depended on it, which is very ironic because their lives DID depend on it
What did the head of the block say to everyone after selection? Why did he say this? He said that they would not be hurt and he said this because
