Allied Powers | An alliance of England, France, The Soviet Union (Russia) and eventually the U.S. |
Alliance | A group of countries that agree to work together in war or trade. |
Appeasement | Giving a country what it wants with the hopes that it will be satisfied and stop. |
Atomic Bomb/ Nuclear Bomb | A weapon first created by the U.S. that creates an explosion many times larger than any previous bomb. |
Axis Powers | An alliance of Germany, Italy, and Japan |
Benito Mussolini | The fascist leader of Italy during WW2. |
Concentration Camp | A prison camp where Jewish people, political prisoners, people in the LGBTQ community, and Romani people were kept by the Nazis to be killed. |
D-Day/ Normandy Invasion | An invasion of Nazi occupied France by the American and British militaries. This was the turning point of the war in Europe and eventually led to the Nazi’s being defeated. |
Democracy | A system of government in which the people of a country vote on laws and representatives. (This is the type of government the U.S. has) |
Dictator/ Dictatorship | A government where one person has complete control over everything. |
Emperor Hirohito | The leader of Japan during WW2. |
Fascism / Fascist | A government built on the belief that one country and race are better than all others. |
Final Solution | Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany’s plan to execute all Jewish people in Europe. |
Fireside Chats | Radio programs created by president FDR to encourage Americans to keep working towards the war effort. |
Franklin D. Roosevelt | The president of the United States during WW2. |
Ghetto | A part of German controlled cities that was walled off from the rest of the city. This is where Jewish people were sent before they were sent to concentration camps during the Holocaust. |
Holocaust | The mass killing of over 6 million Jewish people by Nazi Germany during WW2. |
Island Hopping | The process of taking back islands in the Pacific from the Japanese during WW2. |
Japanese Internment | After the attack at Pearl Harbor the U.S. government saw Japanese immigrants as possible spies. As a result they were sent to prison camps in the Midwest of the U.S. |
League of Nations | A gathering of countries meant to solve world conflicts after WW1. This organization failed because it did not have military power. |
Hiroshima and Nagasaki | The two Japanese cities destroyed by American Nuclear weapons at the end of WW2. |
Korematsu v. The United States | A court case in which a Japanese-American citizen fought against internment in the U.S. |
Lend Lease Act | The U.S. gave the Allies weapons and supplies. In return the Allies gave the United States military bases around the world, and promised to pay them back in the future. |
Pearl Harbor | A United States military base in Hawaii. |
Pearl Harbor Attack | When Japan attacked the battleships at a U.S. military base in order to try to weaken the U.S. before it joined WW2. The attack caused the U.S. to join WW2. |
Propaganda | Posters, movies, music, newspaper articles, and books meant to convince people to do a certain thing (in this case, join the war effort). |
Nazi/ Nazi Party | The group that led Germany during WW2. They believed that Germany was better than all other countries and should be allowed to do whatever they want. |
Neutrality | Before getting involved in the war the U.S. tried not to take sides |
Nuremberg Trials | International court cases in which Nazi German leadership was put on trial for crimes against humanity. |
Rosie the Riveter | A character created to convince women to work in factories while men were away fighting the war. |
Total War | When a country puts all of its resources towards winning a war. This includes people at home saving food, collecting scrap metal, buying war bonds, and growing their own food. |
Treaty of Versailles | The treaty that ended WW1 and was designed to punish Germany. |
Tuskegee Airmen | A segregated African American unit of fighter pilots during WW2. |
Tyranny/ Tyrant | Cruel and overly powerful government. |
United Nations | A group of countries coming together to solve world conflicts that is successful because it has military power. |
Yalta Conference | A meeting of the Big Three (Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin) to discuss peace at the end of the war. |
