Adverse childhood experiences traumatic experiences in a person's life occurring before the age of 18 that the person remembers as an adult
Cortisol a steroid hormone that your adrenal glands, produce and release; affects several aspects of your body and mainly helps regulate your body’s response to stress
Emotional abuse any type of abuse that involves the continual emotional mistreatment of a child that can involve deliberately trying to scare, humiliate, isolate, or ignore a child
Household dysfunction any household that includes parental separation or divorce, substance abuse and criminality in the home, childhood poverty, residential instability, and growing up with a mentally or physically ill parent
Neglect the ongoing failure to meet a child's basic needs (e.g., leaving the child hungry or dirty, or not providing the child with proper clothing, shelter, supervision, or healthcare)
Physical abuse any intentional act causing injury or trauma to another person or animal by way of bodily contact
Resiliency the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness
Toxic stress the prolonged activation of the body’s stress response that can lead to long-term behavior issues, health complications, and diseases
Trauma the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, and diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences
Trauma-informed care care or services characterized by an understanding that problematic behavior may need to be treated as a result of the ACEs or other traumatic experiences someone has had, as opposed to addressing them as simply willful and/or punishable actions
