Explain the reason people like Josef would have left Germany. Hitler began passing laws that discriminated against the Jewish people. Eventually, he began arresting Jews and sending them to concentration camps. In these camps, the Jewish people were starved, tortured, and even killed.
Explain the reason people like Isabel would have left Cuba Fidel Castro took over the island of Cuba. He aligned himself with the Soviet Union. Because of this, the United States cut off ties with Cuba. People found themselves with severe food shortages.
Explain the reason people like Mahmoud would have left Syria. a civil war began in Syria. On top of that, the United States and several other countries were attacking terrorist groups hiding in Syria.
How is the novel structured? (How are the chapters organized?) Why is this effective? There are 53 chapters divided into segments of three. In each group of three chapters, the storylines alternate between Josef (Germany), Isabel (Cuba), and Mahmoud (Syria).
What type of narration is being used? Why is this effective? 3rd person omniscient limited – We do not know who the all-knowing narrator is, but this narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of the three main characters.
