Birds

Avian: Bird
Hen: Female bird of breeding age
Cock: Male bird of breeding age
Brood: Young birds in a nest
Clutch: Total number of eggs in the nest
Incubate: Keeping eggs warm until hatching
Chick: Newborn bird
Fledgling: Young bird that has left the nest, but not independent yet
Flock: Group of birds
Monogamous: Having only one mate at a time—VERY common in birds!
Ornithology: Study of Birds
Crop: Acts as a holding tank for food below the esophagus
Gizzard: Filter system that breaks down hard foods such as shells or bones. Takes place of teeth, so some birds, like the chicken intentionally eat sand and pebbles to help break things down in the gizzard!
Proventriculus: Connects the crop to Gizzard. Secretes digestive enzymes, similar to our stomach
Cloaca (vent): Serves as the rectum
pneumatic hollow and accessible to air.
Psittiaciformes Parrots, such as macaws, cockatoos, cockatiels, budgies, etc.. Also known as hookbills
Passeriformes Perching birds, such as canaries and finches. Also known as songbirds. -Largest order (60%
Parrots need a spacious chew proof cage with numerous enrichment opportunities. Time outside of the cage is a must!
Perching birds need lots of flight and perch space. Nesting boxes should be provided.
