Why do you think the Benelux Agreement was important in the story of European integration? | The Benelux Agreement was important because it showed that the abolition of tariffs on imports and exports could be achieved and was successful (it tripled trade in a decade). |
What was the function of the OEEC? | It was to administer the Marshall Plan funds, encourage economic cooperation and raise living standards in Europe. |
What was the European Convention on Human Rights and why was it important? | The European Convention on Human Rights guaranteed the basic rights of all citizens in Europe to democracy, free speech and protection from torture or unfair trials. |
Why did the French propose setting up the ECSC? | France proposed setting up the ECSC to minimise any threat from a re-emerging West Germany. |
What was the ECSC? | The European Coal and Steel Community: the coal and steel industries of France, West Germany, Italy and the Benelux states were put under a single High Authority. |
How was it different from the bodies that had gone before it? | It was different in that the member states handed over some of their sovereignty to an outside body. The ECSC could make decisions that would be binding on all its members. |
