What is the format of The poem? – 14 lines – Rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG – lines 1 to 12: theme is presented and developed – lines13 to 14: Conclusion which is drawn from first 12 lines – iambic pentameter – Shakespearian/Elizabethan
What is the summary of line 1-4? – The nature of old age is harsh and empathy – time is a destructive force – the cycle of aging is compared to the seasons – the speaker Anticipates his own decay – he will appear as pile and dry as the world is in a cold, biting winter
What is the summary of lines 5–8? – The speaker feels troubled as aging is the end of a cycle – the cycle of aging is compared to moments in a day – night is compared to death – as these approaches the tone becomes one of gloom and melancholy – the speaker feels depressed
What is the summary of lines 9–12? – The fire goes out when the wood which has been feeding it is consumed – so life is extinguished when the strength of youth passes – winter follows spring, spring follows winter – seasons are cyclical, But human life is not – You will not come again f

What is the tone of lines 11 and 12? There is a ton of distress and despondency as the speakers useful energy and vitality have consumed him and he is near his Death
What is the tone of lines 13 and 14? The time changes from depression to conclusion. The speaker has made peace with his approaching death and comfort lies there in that because his friend loves him despite his aging, His sense of loss is gone and the mood of depression is removed.
