What percentage of an animal's body weight is fluids? 60%
What is the water content of a young animal's body? 70-80%
What is the water content of a geriatric animal's body? 50-55%
What body tissue contains the least amount of fluid? Fatty tissue.
Should fluid therapy be calculated using the animals actual body weight or their ideal body weight? Ideal body weight.
What are the main cations of intracellular fluid? Potassium and magnesium.
What are the main anions of intracellular fluid? Chloride and bicarbonate.
What is interstitial fluid? Ultrafiltrate of plasma that surrounds cells.
What are examples of transcellular fluid? Cerebrospinal fluid & synovial fluid.
Define homeostasis. The state of balance among all body systems required for survival.
What is hydrostatic pressure? A pressure that must be applied to a solution to prevent inward flow of water across a semi-permeable membrane.
What is the approximate requirement to maintain water balance in a healthy animal? 50-60ml/kg/day.
