Angioplasty Surgical repair of a vessel
Arrhythmia A problem with the rhythm or rate of your heart beat
Atherosclerosis Thickening or hardening of the arteries
Auscultation Listening to the sounds of the body during a physical examination
Cardiomegaly Enlargement of the heart
Cardiomyopathy Heart muscle diseases
Electrocardiography Abnormal condition of blue discoloration
Endocarditis A condition in which the tissues lining the inside of the heart and the heart valves become inflamed
Hypoxia A condition in which there is a decrease in the oxygen supply to a tissue.
Ischemia Lack of blood supply to a part of the body
Myocardial infarction A medical emergency where your heart muscle begins to die because it isn't getting enough blood flow.
Pericardium A fluid-filled sac that surrounds your heart and the roots of the major blood vessels that extend from your heart.
Sinoatrial Node Generates an electrical signal that causes the upper heart chambers (atria) to contract
Tachycardia Fast heartbeat
Alveolus Tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchioles
Apnea when you stop breathing while asleep
Atelectasis Failure of the lung
Dyspnea Shortness of breath
Emphysema A disorder affecting the alveoli (tiny air sacs) of the lungs
Hemoptysis Coughing up blood
Hemothorax A collection of blood in the space between the visceral and parietal pleura
Orthopnea shortness of breath that occurs while lying flat
Pneumonectomy the surgical removal of the entire lung.
Pneumonia an infection of one or both of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
Tachypnea Rapid breathing
Antibody proteins that protect you when an unwanted substance enters your body.
Antigen Any substance that causes the body to make an immune response against that substance
Dyscrasia swallowing difficulties.
Hematocrit The amount of whole blood that is made up of red blood cells.
Hemoglobin The oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells
Hemostasis The mechanism that leads to cessation of bleeding from a blood vessel
Leukemia Cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue
Lymphocyte A type of white blood cell that is part of the immune system
Pancytopenia A condition in which there is a lower-than-normal number of red and white blood cells and platelets in the blood
Phagocyte A type of immune cell that can surround and kill microorganisms, ingest foreign material, and remove dead cells.
Thrombocytopenia A condition that occurs when the platelet count in your blood is too low
Anaphylaxis A udden, severe and life-threatening allergic reaction that involves the whole body
Splenomegaly The enlargement of the spleen measured by size or weight
Splenectomy An operation to remove the spleen.
Abduction The motion of a limb or appendage away from the midline of the body
Adduction When you move a limb/body part towards the center of the body
Dorsiflexion The backward bending and contracting of your hand or foot
Extension opposite of flexion
Flexion A movement that decreases the angle between two body parts
Kyphosis A curving of the spine that causes a bowing or rounding of the back
Lordosis An exaggerated inward curve of the spine that typically affects the lower back
Osteoarthritis A degenerative joint disease
Osteomalacia soft bone disease
Osteoporosis A condition in which there is a decrease in the amount and thickness of bone tissue.
Polymyalgia Many muscle pain
Pronation A rotational movement of the forearm that results in the palm facing posteriorly
Rheumatoid Arthritis A chronic autoimmune disease that mostly affects joints
Scoliosis A condition marked by a side-to-side curve of the backbone
Supination rotation of the forearm
Thrombocyte colorless cell fragments in our blood that form clots and stop or prevent bleeding
Leukocyte White blood cell
Erythrocytes Red blood cell
