Gr. 6 Q1 Sequence 1

How is Earth Organized?

TermDefinition
Energy The ability to make things move.
Matter Any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume
Radiation A method of heat transfer by electromagnetic waves from a light or heat source.
Conduction A method of heat transfer between two objects in direct contact
Convection A method of heat transfer by the movement of fluids
Biologist A scientist who studies living things
Chemist A scientist who studies chemicals and their reactions
Geologist A scientist who studies rocks and structures on Earth
Astronomist A scientist who studies stars and objects in outer space
Geosphere All of the rocks, minerals, and ground found on and within Earth
Hydrosphere All of the liquid water on Earth
Cryosphere All of the frozen water on Earth
Biosphere All of the living or once living things on Earth
Atmosphere All of the gas/air above the surface of the Earth
Chemical Compositional Layers The layers of the Earth based on chemical contents: Crust, Mantle, Core
Physical Compositional Layers The layers of the Earth based on physical and mechanical properties: Crust, Upper Mantle, Lower Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core.
Scientific Models A representation or description designed to make a particular part/feature of the world easier to understand.
Benefits Positive ways that models help us understand scientific phenomena
Limitations A negative way that models reduce our understanding of models since they are never exactly like the real world
Physical Models Another name for 3D models which look like the thing that they are modeling. Example mini volcanoes
Mathematical Models Composed of number, equations, and other forms of data. Example: Equations, charts, and graphs
Conceptual Models Another name for 2D models. Systems of ideas or comparisons of unfamiliar things with familiar things to help explain unfamiliar ideas.
Crust Also known as the lithosphere. This is the outermost layer of the Earth
Mantle The middle layer of Earth where convection currents occur
Core The innermost layer of the Earth

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
