Ratios & Proportional Relationships

TermDefinition
compare To look for differences and similarities.
conversion A change in the form of a quantity, a unit, or expression without a change in the value. (Example: 12 inches = 1 foot)
double number line diagram A graphic diagram that shows a proportional relationship between two quantities.
equivalent ratios ratios that have the same value
fraction A part of a whole.
measurement To find the size or amount of something.
multiply Repeated addition (Example: 3 x 5 = 5+5+5 = 15)
percent A ratio that compares a number to 100 using the symbol %.
proportional relationship A relationship between two quantities in which the ratio of one quantity to the other quantity is constant.
quantity How much there is of something.
rate A ratio that compares two measurements of different units (Example: Words typed per minute, Miles driven per hour...)
ratio A comparison of two numbers. Can be written in three ways. (Example: 6 to 12, 6:12, or 6/12)
relationship The connection between two (or more) ideas or things.
table Numbers or quantities arranged in rows and columns.
unit price A unit rate that gives the cost per unit.
unit rate A special type of rate. A ratio of two measurements in which the second term is 1. (Example: $40 for 5 books = $8 for 1 book)
