Literary Terms

prologue sets stage for story or provides background information about character, setting, events
in media res in the middle/midst of things
myths answers basic human questions, religious purpose
folktales entertain, contain lessons/morals
fairy tales magic/supernatural beings
fables short stores, morals, TALKING ANIMALS
proverbs short sayings with deep meanings
parables short stories, morals, religious
epics long stores, poetic, larger than life heroes
legends epic stories about possibly real but exaggerated heroes or events
xenia hospitality/customs
flashback memory of the past to fill in details the reader did not witness
allusions references to important people, places, things
epithet adjective or descriptive term to describe a person, place, thing. (Location, appearance, qualities)
foreshadowing hinting at the future
imagery visually descriptive language The sky was as blue as the ocean and the clouds sailed across it like white boats.
exposition the introduction or beginning of a story that reveals important background information.
rising action Rising action is the interplay of the conflict within the story. Obstacles, struggles, and conflicts push the story forward.
climax the turning point where the climax is resolved
falling action the period of time in a story that follows the climax and begins to clarify the narrative, release tension, and wrap things up for the characters.
resolution occurs when the conflict is resolved and loose end have been tied up. A resolution can be used to drive home any themes, tones, and main concepts or final impressions that the author wants to leave with the reader.
setting he time, place, and duration (the time that passes from the beginning to the end) of the story an author chooses to write about.
simile comparing two different things using like or as Her hair is like the golden sun.
metaphor Comparing two different things without using like or as She is a night owl
Extended metaphor An extended metaphor is a version of metaphor that extends over the course of multiple lines, paragraphs, or stanzas of prose or poetry. Extended metaphors build upon simple metaphors with figurative language and more varied, descriptive comparisons.
Personification giving a human characteristic to a non human object The curtains danced.
Hyperbole exaggerated statements that should not be taken literally (That line took forever)
Protagonist the leading charcter
antagonist the character that opposes the leading character
euphemism a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing. (Instead of saying you got fired, you might say "I got let go"
