Popular Sovereignty The idea that government is given power by the citizens.
Rule of Law No one is above the law
Representative Government A political system in which power is exercised by elected leaders who work in the interests of the people
Separation of powers The idea that the powers of a government should be split between two or more independent branches
Natural Rights Life, Liberty, and property
Limited Government Does not have the power to abuse the people
Protection of Minority Rights Minorities have rights and protection from the government
Private Property Rights Citizens have the right to own private property
Due Process Rights The process of court rulings
The right to Protest Every citizen has a right to protest against the government
Individual liberty the freedom that a person has to act and make choices without undue external restraint, especially by the government
Checks on abuses of government each house serves as a check on possible abuses of power or unwise action by the other (checks and balances)
Equality of Opportunity the idea that people ought to be able to compete on equal terms, or on a “level playing field,” for advantaged offices and positions
Federalism the division and sharing of power between the national and state governments.
