Burns

Caused by heat sources such as flame, steam, hot liquid | Thermal Burn |
Caused by contact with active electrical sources | Electrical Burn |
Caused by contact with acidic or alkaline substances | Chemical Burn |
- Superficial burn that only affects the top layer of skin (epidermis) - No blistering - Painful, red skin - Heals in 3-4 days | First degree burn ( superficial) |
- Burn extends below the top layer of skin into layers below - Blistering - Top of blisters consist of dead skin - Two types of second degree burns: superficial partial thickness or Deep partial thickness | Second degree burn (partial thickness) |
- Burn extends all the way through all layers of skin - White, brown, black or cherry red in appearance - May or may not have blisters - Requires specialized treatment and possibly surgery | Third degree burn (Full thickness) |
- extends into the fatty tissue, muscle, and bone - Charred in appearance - Often requires amputation of the affected limb | Fourth degree burn (Subdermal) |
- Splinting, scar management, home modifications, adaptive equipment | OT treatment for burns |
