Place Value Vocab

TermDefinition
billions one place to the left of one hundred million;group of three numbers after the hundred millions place
compare To determine how numbers, objects, or shapes are alike or different.
decimal A number that uses place value and a decimal point to show the value of a number. The whole numbers are to the left of the decimal point and parts (tenths, hundredths, etc.) are to the right of the decimal point.
decimal point A dot separating the ones and tenths places in a decimal number.
expanded form "A number shown as the sum of the values of the digits. 789 = (700) + (80) + (9)"
expanded notation A number written showing the value of each digit.
expression A mathematical combination of numbers, operations, and variables.
greater than More than in size, quantity, or amount; the symbol > stands for is greater than.
less than Smaller in size, quantity or, amount: the symbol < stands for is less than.
standard form A number written with one digit for each place value. The standard form for the number three thousand three is 3,003.
tenth One part in ten equal parts.
hundredth One part in one hundred equal parts
word form A way to show a number using words (nine hundred twenty-five).
digit Any one of the ten symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
