wastewater | Water that has been used in homes, industries, and businesses that is not for reuse unless it is treated. |
pollutants | Substances introduced into the environment that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms. |
organic materials | Natural compounds, often referring to matter from living organisms. |
influent | Water flowing into a treatment plant. |
aeration | The process by which air is circulated through, mixed with, or dissolved in a liquid or substance. |
microbes | Microscopic organisms, especially those which cause disease or fermentation. |
clarifiers | Large settling tanks built with mechanical means for continuous removal of solids being deposited by sedimentation. |
disinfection | The process of cleaning something, especially with a chemical, to destroy bacteria. |
digesters | Large tanks in which bacteria break down biodegradable waste material. |
anaerobic bacteria | Bacteria that grow in the absence of oxygen. |
biosolids | Treated sewage sludge that is safe to use as fertilizer. |
effluent | Liquid waste discharged from a treatment plant into a river or the sea. |
