Verb Tenses/Forms

Simple Present Tense Describes actions/events/conditions that are generally true at any time. (general truth)
Simple Present Tense FORM: base form of the verb
Present Perfect Tense Describes an action that began in the past and continues into the present (exact time is not important).
Present Perfect Tense FORM: has/have + past participle
Present Perfect Progressive Tense Describes an action that began in the past and continues into the present, but especially emphasizing the action.
Present Perfect Progressive Tense FORM: has/have + been + present participle (-ing)
Simple Past Tense Describes an event that happened in the past with a distinct end.
Simple Past Tense FORM: past participle (or irregular)
Past Perfect Tense To indicate that an action was completed before another action began in the past.
Past Perfect Tense FORM: had + past participle
Simple Present Tense To express a habitual or repeated action in the present.
Simple Present Tense To report what appears in print.
Simple Past Tense To indicate that an action occurred in the past with an implication that it is no longer true in the present.
Present Progressive Tense To express an action that is happening right now.
Present Progressive Tense To express that an action is already in progress at a specified point of time in the present.
Present Progressive Tense FORM: am/is/are + present participle (-ing)
Past Progressive Tense To express that an activity was in progress at a specific point of time in the past.
Past Progressive Tense To show that an activity lasted for a period of time in the past.
Past Progressive Tense FORM: was/were + present participle (-ing)
Past Perfect Progressive Tense To emphasize the duration of an activity that was completed before another action or time in the past.
Past Perfect Progressive Tense FORM: had + been + present participle (-ing)
Simple Future Tense To express that an action/event/state will occur in the future.
Simple Future Tense FORM: will + base form
Future Progressive Tense To express that an action will be happening over a period of time at some specific point in the future.
Future Progressive Tense To emphasize the duration of an action in the future.
Future Progressive Tense FORM: will + be + present participle (-ing)
Future Perfect Tense FORM: will + have + past participle
