Empress Theodora Wife of Justinian I; helped rule with him
Nika Riots The most violent riot in Byzantine history; lasted 5 days, destroyed the city, killed over 30,000
Hagia Sophia "Holy Wisdom"; Famous Church by Justinian I; Still standing today
Justinian Code A new legal code that regulated and simplified old Roman laws
Eastern Orthodox A branch of Christianity; created in 1054 because of disagreements with the western Church
Patriarch The Bishop of an important city in the Eastern Orthodox Church
Divine Relating to God; holy; godly
Liturgy The official set of rules for performing a religious ceremony
Icon A religious image used for prayer and devotion
Schism An official split between two groups
Iconoclasm "Icon smashing"; the destruction of religious images
Impress Irene The first female ruler of the Byzantine Empire
