Concurrent Powers | Powers that are shared by both the federal government and the states in the United States |
Defense of Marriage Act | The act declared that no state shall be required to recognize a same gender marriage performed in another state. |
Exclusive Powers | Powers that are delegated only to the federal government |
Extradition | A cooperative law enforcement procedure that involves the transfer of a person accused or convicted of a crime to a different jurisdiction |
Federalism | The sharing of powers between the national government and state governments |
Full faith and credit | The requirement that state courts respect the laws and judgements of courts from other states, Article V |
Police Powers | States have Powers that create and enforce laws on safety,health, and morals |
Privileges and immunities | Protects citizens rights and prevent states from discriminating |
Supremacy clause | State laws can't interfere with the operation of the federal government |
Block Grants | federal money given to states for broadly defined reason/ a specific program (infrastructure projects and public education) no strings attached |
Categorical grants | Grants with particular congressional guidelines or requirements: specific guidelines |
Cooperative federalism | A system of government where state and national governments share power and work together to address common problems |
Devolution | Return of power to state |
Federal Grants | Financial assistance provided by the US federal government to state and local governments |
Fiscal Federalism | The system where the federal government distributes funds to state and local governments through grants and other mechanisms |
Grant-In-aid Programs | Federal money granted to a recipient to fund a project or program |
Mandates | Require states to comply with federal directive, sometimes with the reward of funds and sometimes without |
Personal Responsibility Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act | Restricted the welfare system to return much authority and distribution of welfare dollars to the states |
Revenue Sharing | Federal sharing of a fixed percentage of the revenue with the states |
