Chapter 2 Vocabulary
Term | Definition |

Absolute Value | The distance a number is from zero. 5 and -5 have the same absolute value which is 5 units from zero. Absolute value is indicated by two vertical lines around a number. |
Equation | A mathematical sentence that has an equal sign between two expressions that tells us both sides are equal. |
Expression | A combination of individual terms separated by plus or minus signs. |
Fraction Greater than 1 (improper fraction) | A fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator. This gives us a value greater than 1 whole. |
Graph | Represents numerical information in a visual form. The numbers may come from a table, situation or rule. |
Integers | The set of positive and negative whole numbers, including zero. |
Mixed Number (mixed fraction) | A number that consists of an integer (whole number) and a fraction. |
Ordered Pair (coordinate) | Two numbers written in order as follows: (x,y). These can help us locate or plot points on a graph |
Origin | The point on a graph where the x-axis and y-axis intersect. This point is at the ordered pair or coordinate (0,0). |
Rational Numbers | Rational Numbers Numbers that can be expressed as a fraction. Rational numbers include positive and negative whole numbers, fractions and decimals. |
X- axis | The horizontal number line on a graph. This goes from left to right. |
Y- axis | The vertical number line on a graph. This goes up and down. |
