Equations Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Addition Property of Equality The property that states if you add the same number to both sides of an equation, the new equation will have the same solution.
Coefficient The number in front of a variable in an algebraic expression
Constant A value that does not change, a fixed value
Distributive property an expression which is given in form of A (B + C) can be solved as A × (B + C) = AB + AC
Equation a mathematical statement that shows two expressions are equal to each other, using an equal sign ("=") to connect them
Expression a mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables
Factor a number or algebraic expression that divides another number or expression evenly
Inequality a relationship between two expressions or values that are not equal to each other
Inverse The opposite
Multiplication Property of Equality The property that states if you multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, the new equation will have the same solution.
Reciprocal The inverse of a value or number.
Term numbers and variables that are separated by addition or subtraction.
Variable an unknown value
No solutions Occurs when no value of the variable makes an equation true.
One solution Occurs when one value of the variable makes an equation true
Infinitely many solutions Occurs when every value of the variable makes a true mathematical statement
