Spanish Word/English Definition

Political Party Partido Político A group of people who work together to win elections and control the government.
Ideology Ideología A set of ideas or beliefs about how the government should work.
Libertarian Libertario A person who believes in very little government control and more personal freedom.
Totalitarian Totalitario A type of government where one leader or group has total control over the country.
Two-Party System Sistema Bipartidista A system where two main political parties control the government.
Winner-Take-All El Ganador Se Lleva Todo A system where the person with the most votes wins everything.
Third Party Tercer Partido A political party that is not one of the two main parties.
"Watch Dog" Vigilante A group or person that watches the government to make sure they do the right things.
Democrat Republicano A person in the Republican Party who wants less government in people’s lives.
Liberal Liberal A person who wants change and believes the government should help people.
Conservative Conservador A person who likes to keep traditions and have less government involvement.
Moderate Moderado A person who is between liberal and conservative.
Political Spectrum Espectro Político A way to show different political ideas from liberal to conservative.
General Election Elección General The big election where people vote for president or other government leaders.
Primary Election Elección Primaria An election where a political party chooses who will run in the general election.
National Convention Convención Nacional A large meeting where a political party picks its candidate for president.
Lobbyist Cabildero A person who tries to influence government leaders to help certain groups.
Political Platform Plataforma Política A list of ideas and problems that a political party supports.
