expedition A journey made for a special purpose
Middle Ages Also known as the medieval period, the time between the collapse of the Roman Empire in the fifth century AD and the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
merchants People who buy, sell and trade goods for a living
Astrolab An instrument used by sailors to determine their location by observing the position of the stars and planets
chronometer instrument for measuring time very accurately
colony A group of people in one place who build a settlement in a different territory or land
navigation the science of planning and following a route
Silk Road An ancienty trae route between China and the Mediteranean Sea extending some 6,440 km (4,000 mi) and linking China with the Roman Empire. It brought goods like silk from China to the Roman Empire an then to the rest of the western world.
Circumnavigate to sail all the way around something (especially the world)
Caravel a small, fast Spanish or Portugese sailing ship of the 15th-17th centuries
Songhai a member of a people living mainly in Niger or Mali
seaworthy ships fit or safe for a sea voyage
Gunpowder Invented within China during the 9th century, this substance became the dominate military technology used to expand European and Asian empires by the 15th century
Conquistador Spanish conqueror
isthmmus A narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas
Spanish Reconquista a movement to spread Catholicism in Spain
Vikings Explorers from Scandinavia who discovered the Americas before Christopher Columbus
Northwest Passage A water route from the Atlantic to the Pacific along the coast of North America
