What is Reapportionment? | Adjusting the number of seats in the House of Representatives for each state on changes in population |
What is Redistricting? | Drawing new voting boundaries so that each district has roughly the same number of people |
What is Gerrymandering? | Redistricting in a way to benefit a political party, or politician |
What was the Shaw vs. Reno (1962) case? | SCOUTS ruled that districts must be similarly sized to ensure voter equality |
Why is redistricting important? | It adjusts districts so they are equally populated and represent the views of the districts residents |
What are 3 ways Gerrymandering can be used to influence the election? | It can remove the power of a citizens vote. It can refused the voting power of a political party. It can increase the chance that a certain group has representation in Congress |
What is the Supreme Court's view on Gerrymandering? | It should be left up to the states to decide unless it's based on race |
What is the basic problem with drawing voting districts? | Everyone wants to draw districts in a way that favors their party/candidate |
What is the 15th Amendment? | People of Color (POC) cannot be denied the right to vote |
What is the 19th Amendment? | Woman cannot be denied the right to vote |
What is the 24th Amendment? | People who failed to pay their taxes cannot be denied to the right to vote |
What is the 26th Amendment? | People 18 and older cannot be denied the right to vote |
What age group usually votes? | Voters are typically over the age of 30 and under than age of 75. People between 18-24 (and older than 75) are less likely to vote |
What education group usually votes? | People with Bachelor's degrees or higher are more likely to vote than people without a high school degree |
What income group usually votes? | The middle/upper wealthy class are more likely to vote than the lower/poverty class |
How do voters choose among candidates, party affiliation wise? | Most Americans align themselves with a party and vote for it's candidates |
How do voters choose among candidates, political issues wise? | Voters tend to look for candidates who hold positions on the issues that are similar to their own positions |
How do voters choose among candidates, candidates characteristics wise? | Voters may be drawn to candidate who seems friendly trustworthy, or "presidential" |
What are the two views on nonvoting? | Has a negative effect on American society, with lower class being denied the ability to vote OR citizens are so salified with the government they do not feel the need to vote |
