adnexa accessory structures of an organ
Stroma describes supporting tissue of an organ
Orbit bony cavity of the skull that contains the eyeball

Extrinsic Muscles 6 muscles that attach the outside of the eyeball to the bones of the orbit
Levator Palpebrae muscles that raise the upper eyelid
Canthus the angle where upper and lower eyelids meet
Tarsal Plate platelike framework within the upper and lower eyelids that provide stiffness and shape
Meibomian Glands sebaceous glands on the margins of each eyelid also called the tarsal glands
Cilia hairlike structures at the edge of each eyelid
Conjunctiva mucous membrane that lines the underside of each eyelid
Nictatating membrane conjunctival fold attached at the medial canthus that moves across the cornea when closed also called the third eyelid or nicitans or haws
lacrimal apparatus structures that produce, store, and remove tears
Lacrimation the condition of normal tear secretion
Lacrimal Canaliculi ducts at the medial canthus that collect tears and drains them into the lacrimal sacs
Dorsal punctum small spot near the upper medial canthus where the nasolacrimal duct begins
Ventral punctum small spot near the lower medial canthus where the nasolacrimal duct begins
Sclera outer layer of the eye that helps maintain shape
choroid opaque middle layer of the eye
Cornea transparent anterior portion of the sclera
Descemets Membrane innermost layer of the eye
Tapetum Lucidum brightly colored iridescent reflecting tissue layer of the choroid
Tapetum Nigrum black pigmented tissue layer of the choroid
Iris pigmented muscular diaphragm of the choroid that surrounds the pupil
pupil circular opening in the center of the iris
Constriction making the opening smaller
Miosis pupillary constriction
Dilation making the opening larger
Mydriasis pupillary dilation
Lens clear, flexible, avascular, curved capsule located posterior to the iris and pupil
Ciliary muscles muscles that adjust the shape and thickness of the lens
retina nervous tissue layer that receives images and lines the posterior chamber of the eye
