Drug Calc Rnd Rules

Rules for rounding in Drug Calculations

QuestionAnswer
More than 1 mL (injections or liquids) carry to hundredths and round to tenths. Ex 1.17 = 1.2mL
Less than 1 mL (injections or liquids) carry to thousandths and round to hundredths. Ex. 0.167 = 0.17mL
Minims must be rounded to whole numbers. 16.2m = 16m
Milligrams carried to hundredths and rounded to tenths. Ex. 26.76mg = 26.7mg
Kilograms carried to hundredths and rounded to tenths. Ex. 150lbs = 68.18kg = 68.2kg
Pounds expressed in whole numbers when going from kg to lbs. Ex. 71kg = 156.2lbs = 156 lbs
Temperature carried to hundredths and rounded to tenths
teaspoons, ounces, drams, and tablespoons must be converted to mL and rounded accordingly
Insulin rounded to the nearest whole number. Ex. 3.2 = 3 units, 7.6 units = 8 units.
1 glass 8oz = 240 mL
1 cup 8oz = 240 mL
1 teacup 6oz = 180mL
1 styrofoam cup 6oz = 180mL
1 popsicle 3 oz = 90mL
ice cubes melt to 1/2 original volume
1 oz 30mL
1 tablespoon (T, Tbs) 15mL
1 teaspoon (t, tsp) 5mL
