Music techniques

Musical features and techniques key terms

TermDefinition
Syncopation a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm
Motif a short musical idea, longer than a single note but shorter than an entire section.
Extended chords Chords beyond the 7th. 9th 11th &13th
Chromaticism to create dramatic tension, highlight key moments, and enhance the emotional depth of the music
Imitation repetition of a melody in a polyphonic texture shortly after its first appearance in a different voice.
Vamping A repeated chord progression or rhythmic figure leading either into or out of a tune or composition
Triplet notes a rhythm playing three notes in the space of two
Glissando A glide from one pitch to another
Tremelo Trembling affect
Trills A rapid alternation between 2 adjacent notes
Staccato A sharply detached or separated from other notes
Descending thirds a series of chords whose root notes descend by a third each sequential repetition
Panning distribution of an audio signal into a new stereo or multi-channel sound field
Reverberation created when a sound occurs in a space, sending sound waves out in all directions
Tridic notes musical scale with twelve pitches, each a semitone, also known as a half-step, above or below its adjacent pitches
Lilting gently rises and falls in a way that is pleasant to listen to.
Contrapuntal music the use of multiple independent melodies, each of which is given equal weight
