What is a noxious stimulant? Something that damages or destroys tissues
What do nociceptors do? Transmit pain message to brain via the spinal cord
What is peripheral sensitation? Reactive nociceptors excite dormant ones to respond
What is central sensitization? Heightened response found in the spinal cord.
What are the 4 basic processes involved in nociception? Transduction, transportation, modulation & perception
What is neuropathic pain? Pain caused by damage to the nervous system
What is inflammatory pain? Clinical pain initiated by tissue damage & inflammation
What are some negative consequences of pain? Tachycardia, hypertension, increase of oxygen consumption
What is released when pain is percieved? Catecholamines, cortisol & glucose
What are some physiological effects of pain? Increased temperature, panting, dilated pupils, shaking/shivering
What type of analgesia is described as the cornerstone of effective postoperative pain treatment? Opioids
What are the 3 receptors opioids react on? Mu, delta & kappa
What is the most potent opioid? Full mu opioid agonst
What is an example of a full mu opioid agonist? Methadone, morphine, fentanyl, pethidine
How long does onset happen for partial mu opioid agonists? 20-30 mins
What schedule is buprenorphine? schedule 3
What is an example of a full mu agonist? Naloxone
What is an example of a NMDA antagonist? Ketamine
When is use of ketamine indicated? When neuropathic or chronic pain is present
What type of analgesia produces a synergistic effect when given with opioids? Alpha-2 agonist; medetomidine
What are some side effects of medetomedine? Bradycardia, hypotension, vasoconstriction, hypoventilation, reduced tear production & increased diuresis
What does NSAID stand for? Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs
What enzyme do NSAIDs specifically block? Cyclooxygenase (COX) pathway
What are some contraindications of NSAID use? Dehydration, hypovolaemic, low BP, kidney disease, GI upset, concurrent steroid use.
What drugs should never be used in cats? Paracetamol
How does paracetamol work? Blocks the chemical receptors in the brain to prevent perception of pain.
