Recall Questions Chapter 44 Dental Liners, Bases, and Bonding Systems

TermDefinition
What is the function of a dental liner? protects the pupal tissue from irritation caused by physical, mechanical, chemical, and biologic elements.
Within the cavity preparation, where is a liner placed? The liner is placed in the deepest dentin surface of the preparation.
What are the unique qualities of calcium hydroxide? protects pulp from chemical irritation, stimulates the production of reparative or secondary dentin, it is compatible with all types of restorative materials.
What is the main ingredient in varnish? resin
Can varnish be placed under all restorative materials? If not, with which materials is it contraindicated? NO, because dental varnish interferes with the bonding and setting reaction of composite resins
What toxic element is in a desensitizer? hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and glutaraldehyde
What does a desensitizer do? seal the dentinal tubules, this preventing oral fluids, from seeping between the tooth and the restoration, which eventually cause sensitivity.
What does an insulating base provide for the restoration of a tooth? to protect the tooth from thermal shock. It occurs when sudden temperature changes occur.
What base material contains eugenol? What effect does eugenol have on the pulp? Zinc-Oxide-Eugenol (ZOE). has a soothing effect on painful irritated pulp. However ZOE cannot be used under composite resins, glass ionomer or other resin restorations.
Where is a base applied in the preparation? the entire plural floor is covered with a base to thickness of 1 to 2mm. the base material has a putty like consistency and provides a buffer or layer between the pulp and the restoration
What dental instrument is used to adapt a base into the cavity preparation? A dental condenser
What is the purpose of a dental bonding material? to improve the retention, to repair and enhance teeth
What is an example of enamel bonding? sealants, bonding orthodontic brackets and resin bonded bridges
What must be removed from the tooth structure for bonding material to adhere to dentin? smear layer
Which material is applied first—the bonding or etchant material? etchant
