Kingdoms of the Nile

Cataracts Rapids along a river, such as those along the Nile in Egypt.
Delta A triangle-shaped area of land made from soil deposited by a river
Menes Egyptian King who united Upper and Lower Egypt
Pharaoh The title used by the rulers of Egypt
Dynasty A series of rulers from the same family
Theocracy A government ruled by religious authorities
Khufu The most famous pharaoh of the Egyptian Old Kingdom
Afterlife life after death; much of Egyptian religion focused on the this
Mummy Specially treated body wrapped in cloth for preservation
Pyramid A huge triangular tomb built by the Egyptians and other peoples
Middle Kingdom The period of Egyptian history from about 2050 to 1750 BC and marked by order and stability.
New Kingdom period from about 1550 to 1050 BC in Egyptian history, when Egypt reached the height of its power and glory
Trade Routes A path followed by traders
Queen Hatshepsut One of the first female pharaohs of Egypt, supported trade and art
Ramses the Great Arguably the most powerful pharaoh from Ancient Egypt, led the fight against the Hyksos
Hieroglyphs The ancient Egyptian writing that used picture symbols
Rosetta Stone A huge stone slab inscribed with hieroglyphics, Greek, and a later form of Egyptian writing that allowed historians to decode hieroglyphics
Sphinxes An imaginary creature with a human head (most times) and the body of a lion
Obelisk A tall, pointed, four-sided pillar typical of ancient Egypt
King Tutankhamen Egyptian pharaoh whose tomb was discovered by British historians
Piankhi Kushite ruler who began the Kushite Dynasty in Ancient Egypt

Queen Shanakhdakheto First female ruler of the Kushites
