3.03 Interior Vocab

TermDefinition
Bubble Diagram A type of concept map that uses ovals and circles to represent rooms and their relationships within the diagram of a building footprint.
Block Diagram A diagram that refines the shapes of the bubbles into rooms and more clearly align the shapes and their locations within the building structure.
Circulation Pattern The routes people follow as they move from one place to another within a space.
Traffic Pattern The patterns in which users move within a space.
Private Zone Spaces allocated to private living.
Public/Social Zone Public areas that include the entry, living room, great room, dining room, and guest bathroom.
Work Zone Highly functional areas where any type of work occurs.
Open Floor Plan Multiple rooms combined into one big room that is separated by furniture arrangements. Applies only to common areas.
Closed Floor Plan Each room is separated by walls and hallways.
Semi-open Floor Plan A hybrid mix of open and closed floor plans, a plan with two rooms that are open to each other instead of three, designs may include partial walls, cased doorways, or l-shaped rooms.
Chrome Therapy A type of light therapy that uses colored light to create soothing effects.
Primary Bathroom A full bathroom that is only accessible through the master bedroom.
En-suite Bathroom A bathroom that is directly connected to a bedroom.
Jack and Jill Bathroom A full bathroom with two or more entrances, usually from two bedrooms on either side of the bathroom.
Conversation Grouping An arrangement of furniture that fosters communication among users.
Flex room A room within a home that can change usage to meet or suit any need.
Work triangle The historic three major work areas: sink, cook top/oven, and refrigerator.
Island A free standing piece of cabinetry that is placed in a kitchen to supplement counter top space.
Peninsula A cabinet or series of cabinets that are only connected to the main body of the kitchen on one side.
Mudroom A small room or entryway where footwear, outerwear and misc. items can be removed/stored before entering a house.
