Bargaining and Persuasion Used by the President to attempt to get Congress to agree with and pass the legislative agenda
Commander in Chief The President
Formal Powers Powers explicitly granted to the President in article II
Executive agreement a contact between two heads of state: the president and a prime minister, king, or president of another nation. Does NOT require the Senates 2/3rd vote
Executive order empowers the President to carry out the law or to administer the government
Executive privilege the right to withhold information or their decision making process from another branch
Informal powers powers NOT stated in the Constitution
Line-item veto Allows a chief executive to veto specific parts of a bill without vetoing the entire bill
Pocket veto President does nothing, does not sign a bill, in the last 10 final days of Congressional session
Policy agenda A set of issues that are significant to people involved in policy making
Signing statements Presidents make this after a bill is signed or during, Explains their interpretation of a bill, their understanding of what is expected of them to carry out.
Veto President rejects a bill
Ambassador A top diplomat appointed to represent the U.S. with a foreign nation
Cabinet A group of Presidential advisers, including the needs of the executive departments, the attorney general, etc.
Chief of Staff The highest ranking staff member within the White House, responsible for managing the Presidents daily operations, a chief advisor.
