River Valley Civilization Government words

TermDefinition
pharaoh the ruler of ancient Egypt and was both the head of state and the religious leader of the people; translated as "great house"
vizier the second-in-command to the pharaoh, and was the highest-ranking government official
dynasty a series of rulers or leaders who are all from the same family, or a period when a country is ruled by them:
dynastic cycle the historical pattern of the rise, decline, and replacement of dynasties in China.
mandate of heaven the idea that there could be only one legitimate ruler of China at a time, and that this ruler had the blessing of the gods.
Hammurabi's Code a set of 282 laws inscribed in stone by the Babylonian king Hammurabi that set fines and punishments to meet the requirements of justice.
emperor a ruler of an empire with power and dignity that is greater than that of a king.
city-state – An independent political unit consisting of a city and its surrounding territory.
stele – A stone monument often inscribed with laws or significant events.
justice fairness in the way people are dealt with often in regard to laws.
