Physiology
How do ligand-gated channels function? | They open/close in response to a chemical stimulus. |
what two chemicals can open\close LGC? | neurotransmitters and hormones |
where are LGC located? | in pain receptors or cell body interneurons and motor neurons |
Brain and spinal cord are located where? | The central nervous system |
Cranial nerves are connected to what? | the brain |
Somatic NS | controls skeletal muscles |
Visceral NS | controls smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands |
Parasympathetic NS | decreases heart rate |
Sympathetic NS | increases heart rate |
ADH (antidiuretic hormone) | targets kidneys for water conservation |
OCT (oxytocin) | targets mammary glands and uterus for milk inducing into the secretory ducts and uterine contractions during child birth |
ACTH (adrenocorticotropin) | targets the adrenal cortex to stimulate the release of cortisol |
LH (luteinizing hormone) | targets ovaries and testes to stimulates estrogen secretion, egg maturation, sperm production |
