State/Local Government Word Wall
Term | Definition |

Federalism | When some powers are divided between the national government and the state governments while others are shared. |
10th Amendment | States that any power not given to the federal government or denied to the states in the constitution belongs to the states. |
Sales Tax | A tax on a good or service. |
Excise Tax | An additional tax on specific goods. example: tobacco |
Income Tax | A tax on how much an individual or business earns. |
Initiative | A process by which citizens of a state may propose a law by collecting signatures on a petition. |
Referendum | A method of referring a bill to the voters for approval before the bill can become law. |
Recall | A process by which voters may remove an elected official from office. |
Governor | The chief executive of a state government. Currently in AL: Kay Ivey |
Item Veto | The power a governor sometimes has to veto a specific part of a bill instead of the entire bill. |
Lieutenant Governor | The official who succeeds the governor if the governor dies, resigns, or is removed from office. Currently in AL: Will Ainsworth |
Home Rule | The power of a city to write its own municipal charter and to manage its own affairs. |
Charter | A basic plan of government granted by state legislatures to local governments. |
City Council | The lawmaking body of a city. |
Ordinance | Regulations (laws) that govern a local government. |
