Bill of Rights

First Ten Amendments to the U.S. Constitution

QuestionAnswer
1st Amendment five freedoms: religion, speech, press, petition and assembly
2nd Amendment right to bear arms (keep and use guns)
3rd Amendment prevents the government from placing troops in private homes (we call this quartering)
4th Amendment protects citizens against unreasonable search and seizure of their property
5th Amendment protects citizens by granting them the right not to testify against themself in court (we call this "pleading the 5th") also protects accused people: cannot be tried for the same crime twice, and government cannot take property without compensation
6th Amendment legal protections for people accused of crimes: speedy trial by a jury, a lawyer, and to be made aware of the crimes one is accused of
7th Amendment civil (non-criminal cases) will also have a trial by jury
8th Amendment protection against excessive bail and fines, and protection against cruel and unusual punishment
9th Amendment any rights that are not listed in the Constitution are reserved for the people
10th Amendment any powers not given specifically to the U.S. government are reserved for the people and the states
