Foundations of U.S. Democracy (Colonial Influences)
Term | Definition |

Rule of Law | The idea that all people must follow the laws, and that the laws are enforced fairly |
Self-government | People can make decisions on how their government should work. |
Due process | People have the right to fair and reasonable laws. Officials have to follow rules when enforcing laws and treat all people the same way. |
Limited government | A government that has been limited in power by a constitution, or written agreement. |
Individual rights | A set of things that people believe they should be free to do without government restrictions. |
Magna Cart | document written by the nobility to limit the power of King John. It introduced the concept of limited government, individual rights, rule of law, and due process. |
Mayflower Compact | document written after British colonists mistakenly landed in MA instead of VA and worried about who was in charge. It introduced the concept of self-government. |
English Bill of Rights | document written to expand the rights of Parliament and the people even further |
Albany Plan of Union | document written to unify the colonists against the French during the French and Indian War. Though it was ultimately unsuccessful, it introduced the concept of unifty for the independent colonies. |
