What happened in the 1830s? Many people in the separate states and kingdoms of Italy wanted to form one nation.
What did Mazzini do? argued that the land within Italy's natural boundaries should be one country and urged Italians to think of themselves as one people.
What did Garibaldi do? Helped organize an army for revolution called the Red Shirts and freed Sicily, Naples, and much of Southern Italy.
What did Count Camillo de Cavour do? United much of Northern Italy, Persuaded Garibaldi to set up a kingdom of Italy, 1870- Italy became fully united
Who was Otto von Bismarck? Chancellor (Prime Minister) of Prussia in 1862.
What did Otto von Bismarck want? He wanted to unite the German states under Prussian rule.
What was the main goal of the German Confederation? To keep the German states independent.
What happened by 1871? All German states except Austria had joined with Prussia.
What does Kaiser mean? German word for emperor; Wilhelm I was the first Kaiser of the German Empire.
When and Who made Japan trade with the US? Commodore Matthew Perry of the US made Japan trade with the US in 1853.
What was the main goal of Meiji Restoration? To build national feelings by challenging the west.
What does Imperialism mean? The control of foreign lands by stronger states.
What is cash crops? A crop that is raised to sell to others to be used by others rather than be used at home.
How many European nations met in Germany to divide up Africa? 14.
What is Direct Rule? A type of colonial gov’t in which Europeans chose all gov’t officials.
What is Indirect Rule? A type of colonial gov’t that allowed some participation by local officials.
What did the British gain control of? Suez Canal, India, and Egypt
Who was the Opium War between and who won? China and Britain--British won.
Japanese gained control of what? Chinese Island of Formosa, which is present day Taiwan.
What is the open door policy? A policy whereby all countries have an equal opportunity to trade freely in a certain place.
What are the five great lakes? Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.
