Postmodernism

TermDefinition
Todd Schorr, Into the Valley Of Finks and Weirdos It is the fusion of pop culture and higher-status references molded together. To some it might mean something to others it might not. This highlights the meaning of Postmodernism it is entirely up to interpretation in a non-stuck up way
PostModernism Emphasizes the diversity of human experience and the idea of multiple perspectives. It contains aspects of current life and media. Often asks the question: what is art?
Where can it be applied Critical theory, philosophy, architecture, art, literatur, and culture
Where does it come from It emerged in reaction to (positive) modernism. Some ideas are the same. It was influenced by disillusionment introduced by WWII. It emerged after the Death of the American Dream.
What does it do It celebrates the meshing of various cultures and lacks standard idealist nature of modernism. It takes ideas and puts them together. You can either except it or string it into a web of diff. ideas. Ex. Beasty Boys Second Album (Pauls Boutique)
Metanarrative Describes bigger ideas like gender. Family dinner ex.: In the past family gathered together to eat a home cooked meal typically served by the man of the house this represents modernism. Postmodernism is the newer generation going to eat dinner at a mall
Traits Metanarratives, acceptance of hyper real (someday imitations of things will be more important than actual things itself. Consumer/ media semiotics, resistance to single interpretation, playful
Differnces between modernism and Postmodernism Modernist art (Cubanism) are interpretations of what is already there. Postmodern artist use pop art to blur lines between high and low culture contrasting elements of both. Having many accepted variations of something
