Treatment Goals • Overcome psychological problems and mental distress. • Help clients alter illogical beliefs and thinking patterns.
Key Concepts - 1. A-B-C ● A – Activating Event: Something happens in the environment around you. ● B – Beliefs: You hold a belief about the event or situation. ● C – Consequence: You have an emotional response to your belief.
Key Concepts - 2. Common Irrational Beliefs: •Believing that you must be 100 percent competent and successful in everything. •You will be happier if you avoid life’s difficulties or challenges. •Feeling that you have no control over your own happiness;
Key Concepts -3 -Self-Acceptance: •Human Worth: Everyone is equally worthy regardless of their strengths and weaknesses. •Acceptance of Flaws: It is okay to have both positive and negative qualities.
Key Concepts -4 Other Acceptance • Other people may not always treat you fairly. • There is no law requiring others to treat you fairly. • People who treat you unfairly are not inherently better or worse than anyone else.
Key Concepts -5 Life Acceptance Life does not always work out the way that you want. There is no rule that life has to go the way that you want. Although life will not always be pleasant, it is never awful or completely unbearable.
Phases of Treatment - Beginning • Provide psychoeducation about REBT. • Identify underlying irrational thought patterns and beliefs. • Modification of feelings and behaviors.
Phases of Treatment - Middle •Thx uses direct and confrontational methods to challenge ct •Thx is blunt, honest, logical to encourage clients to change their thoughts and behaviors •Cts encouraged to change unwanted behaviors using meditation, journaling, and guided imagery
