| patriarchy | A social system in which men hold primary power, dominating in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege, and control of property. |
| citizen | A legally recognized member of a state with rights and duties; in Ancient Rome, citizens had the right to vote and participate in government. |
| plebeian | A commoner in Ancient Rome; plebeians were the general body of Roman citizens who were not part of the patrician class. |
| patrician | A member of the noble families in Ancient Rome; patricians were the elite class with significant political and social power. |
| Roman Forum | the central public space in ancient Rome where citizens gathered for public life and was home to important government buildings, temples, marketplaces, and courts. |
| freeman | a former slave who was legally given their freedom and rights |
| domus | a type of urban home, primarily occupied by the wealthy and upper-class |
