Basic Editing Terms

proofreaders' marks symbols that are used to mark changes that need to be made in a document
editing using proofreaders' marks to show exactly how a document should be revised
backspace key erases the characters to the left of the insertion point
insert key activates/deactivates the overtype feature
overtype allows you to key overexisting text
delete key erases characters to the right of the insertion point
insert proofreader symbol meaning to add
delete proofreader symbol meaning to remove
transpose proofreader symbol meaning to change position of
clipboard temporary storage area in your software where selected data is temporarily stored before being copied to another location
copy command that allows you to move selected material to temporary storage so it can later be duplicated in the document
paste command that allows you to remove information from temporary storage and place it in a new area of the document
cut command that removes selected material from the document and places it in temporary storage to be placed in a new area of the document
click-shift-click method for precisely selecting text
selecting highlighting text so that you can change it in some way
print command that allows you to produce hard copies of documents on paper
Italic special font attribute in which characters are slanted for emphasis
undo command that reverses the last action taken
copy/paste allows you to duplicate information in a document
bold print enhancement used to make characters appear darker for emphasis
save command that allows you to store data on a hard drive, floppy disk, or cd-rom
save as command which allows you to name a file and set a path for saving
alignment software feature that allows you to change horizontal position of text such as left, center, and right
