What is the action of the Flexor carpi radialis? flexor and abductor of the radial side of the wrist joint
What is the insertion of the Flexor carpi ulnaris? Pisiform bone
What is the action of the Flexor carpi ulnaris? Flexes the ulnar side of the wrist joint(so enabling the hand to move in an ulnar direction)
What is the insertion of the Palmaris longus? Fascia of the palm
What is the action of the Palmaris longus? Flexes the wrist
What is the insertion of the Abductor pollicis longus? base of MC bone of the thumb
What is the action of the Abductor pollicis longus? Abducts and extends the thumb (tendon runs close to the EPB)
What is the insertion of the Extensor pollicis brevis? Base of the proximal phalanx of the thumb
What is the action of the Extensor pollicis brevis? Extends the thumb (tendon runs close to the APL)
What is the insertion of the Extensor pollicis longus? Base of distal phalanx of the thumb
What is the action of the Extensor pollicis longus? Extends the thumb
What is the insertion of the Extensor carpi ulnaris? Base of 5th MC
What is the action of the Extensor carpi ulnaris? Extends the ulnar side of the wrist joint (so enabling the hand to move laterally in an ulnar direction) Important for making a fist
What is the origin of the Extensor carpi radialis? Lateral epicondyle of the humerus
What is the action of the Extensor digitorum? Extends the fingers
What is the action of the Extensor digiti minimi? Extends the little finger
What is the action of the Abductor pollicis brevis? Abducts and flexes the thumb
What is the action of the Opponens pollicis? Helps to oppose the thumb to the finger tip (i.e. form a pincer grip)
What is the insertion of the Gastrocnemius? Via the Achilles tendon (tendocalcaneus) into the Calcaneum
What is the action of the Gastrocnemius? Planter flexion of ankle joint
What is the insertion of the Soleus? Via the Achilles tendon (tendocalcaneus) into the Calcaneus
What is the origin of the Tibialis Anterior? Upper surface of tibia, lateral to medial crest
What is the insertion of the Tibialis Anterior? Forms a strong tendon which inserts into the side of the medial cuneform (and proximal end of 1st MT bone)
What is the action of the Tibialis Anterior? Dorsiflexion of ankle and invertion of foot
What is the insertion of the Extensor Hallucis longus? Passes lateral to TA tendon and runs to the base of 1st distal phalanx
What is the action of the Extensor Hallucis longus? Extension of big toe
What is the insertion of the Extensor digitorum longus? Passes lateral to EHL tendon to insert into the middle and distal phalanges of 2nd to 5th toes
What is the action of the Extensor digitorum longus? Extension of the toes
What is the insertion of the Peroneus longus? Passes behind the lateral malleolus and then runs under the foot to insert into the base of the 1st MT
What is the action of the Peroneus longus? Everts the foot
What is the insertion of the Peroneus brevis? Passes behind the lateral malleolus (with Peroneus longus) runs superior to P Longus tendon to tip of tuberosity on 5th MT
What is the action of the Peroneus brevis? Everts the foot
What is the action of the Iliopsoas? Flexion of the hip joint
What is the action of the Piriformis? Stabilises hip joint and laterally rotates the femur
What is the action of the Gluteus Maximus? Extends hip against gravity (used in standing from crouching, hill climbing and running)
What is the action of the Tensor fascia lata? Braces the knee
What is the insertion of the Quadriceps? Tibial tuberosity of the tibia via the patella and patella tendon
What is the action of the Quadriceps? Extends the knee
What is the action of the Sartorius? Crossing of legs (knee flexion)
What is the action of the lateral hamstrings (biceps femoris)? Flexion of knee and extension of hip
What is the action of the medial hamstrings (semimembrinosus and semitendinosus)? Flexion of knee and extension of hip
What is the origin of the Trapezius? Long origin from central occiput and spinous processes of C2 to T12 vertebrae
What is the insertion of the Trapezius? Body of scapula, scapular spine and lateral aspect of clavicle
What is the action of the Trapezius? Supports shoulder, shrugging and retraction of shoulder
What is the origin of the Latissimus dorsi? T7 to L5 vertebrae, sacrum and illiac crests
What is the insertion of the Latissimus dorsi? Bicipital groove of upper humerus
What is the action of the Latissimus dorsi? Extends and internally rotates the arm
What is the action of the Pectoralis major? Adducts, flexes and internally rotates arm at the shoulder joint
What is the origin of the Rectus abdominis? Pubic bone and pubic symphysis
What is the insertion of the Rectus abdominis? Costochondral cartilage of ribs 7 to 10, the inferior portion of the sternum and xiphoid process
What is the action of the Rectus abdominis? Flexion of the lower portion of the anterior torso
What is the origin of the Sternocleidomastoid? Divided heads; one insertion into the manubirium, and one into the medial end of the clavicle
What is the insertion of the Sternocleidomastoid? mastoid process
What is the action of the Sternocleidomastoid? Turning the head from side to side, also turning to the side, and forward flexion of the neck
What is the action of the Masseter? Clenching and side to side movement of the jaw
