inference conclusion based on observation, reasoning and knowledge

theory explanation thought to be true through repeated testing
law phenomenon that occurs the same way every time it is tested under the same conditions
fact phenomenon that can not be proven false with more testing

independent variable Factor in an experiment that is changed by the experimenter and it in turn causes a change in our results
dependent variable Factor in an experiment that responds to changes and is measured. It changes as a result of our investigation

identify the problem considered to be the first step in problem solving scientifc methods
conclusion inferences drawn from data and observations
Hypothesis A prediction that can be tested. Often written as an "if...then..."statement
