Attention | part of perception process in which we acknowledge the reception of sensations from environment, size, intensity, frequency, contrast, motion, change, novelty |
Perception | behavior of others is influenced by how you perceive them; process of interpreting and organizing sensations |
Sensations | Environment stimuli that we are capable of receiving through:sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing |
perceptual organization | our attempt to organize the sensations we perceive |
principles of perceptual organization | Figure ground, similarity, proximity, closure |
figure ground | perceive objects that stand against a background |
similarity | stimuli that have common physical traits are more likely to be grouped together than those that do not |
proximity | associated because they are close together |
closure | most stimuli we perceive is incomplete we naturally tend to extrapolate information and project additional information to form a complete picture |
halo effect | refers to the tendency to allow one personality trait to influence our perception of other traits |
primacy effect | tend to use first impressions to unduly influence our judgement |
stereotyping | characterizing a person by one or two traits |
discrimination | preluded by prejudice; the act of singling out an individual due to prejudice |
prejudice | unreasonable bias due to race, religion or sex |
self-fulfilling prophesy (Pygmalion effect) | a person acts in a way that confirms others suspicions |

Personality traits | enduring characteristics that describe an individuals attitudes and behavior |
Fundamental attribution error | tendency to overestimate the influence of personality factors when interpreting the actions of people |
