PRAXIS Government Powers/Federalism

what are delegated powers? powers the Constitution grants or delegates to the national government
what are expressed powers? powers directly stated in the Constitution (most found in first 3 articles)
levy and collect taxes, coin money, make war, regulate commerce are examples of expressed powers
what are implied powers? powers that the national government requires to carry out the powers that are expressly defined in the Constitution. they are not specifically listed
what are inherent powers? powers that the national government may exercise simply because it is a government
what are reserved powers? powers for the state government
what are powers of the state governmnet? regulate intrastate commerce, establish local government systems, administer elections, and protect the publics health, welfare, and morals
what are concurrent powers? powers of the national and state governments
what is the establishment clause? prevents Congress from creating a state sponsored religion
what is the free exercise clause? prevents the government from impeding the religious beliefs of Americans
what are some duties of citizens? obeying the law, paying taxes, and being loyal to the American Governments and its bsic principles
what are some responsibilties of citizens? to be informed, vote, respect the rights and property of others, and respect different opinions and ways of life, knowing about rights and laws, participating in political life, and voting
equality means all people are entitled to equal rights and treatment before the law
what are some key issues today concerning civil liberties? affirmative action, discrimination against women, the right to know about ogvernment actions, privacy and the fight against terrorism.
