What is the difference between Etic and Emic? | Etic is the view of the outsider where assumptions are often made while emic is the view of the insider and is within the culture. |
What are the major categories of the universal pattern? | Infrastructure Structure Superstructure |
What makes an infrastructure? | Food, how to live, shelter |
What makes a structure | Interrelationships (family, marriage, gender,) Social |
What makes a superstructure? | Mental (emotion, religion, language, the arts) |
Definition of Ethnocentrism: | assumption that one ethnic group is better, their way is the only way. Contributes to hostility towards other ethnic groups. |
Definition of Cultural Relativism: | trying to understand parts of cultures within its own conduct. |
Explain the Hunter/Gather way of life: | wanders when food scarce, group size is small (50-75), children aged further apart, marriage ties family together, relatives on both sides are equal, children observe parents for hunter/gatherer skills, no formal leader - survival based on everyone ETC. |
Explain Horticulturalist way of life: | Keep gardens/farms, gradual movement, more food= more fertile woman= more kids, only men own garden, polygamy often for men, ancestor worship, ETC |
Explain Subsistence Farmers way of life: | family farm, try to grow own food, some peasants, families intimate, more kids= pop. rises ETC |
Explain State way of life: | rely on subsistence farmers, complex (classes of people-rich, middle class), triggered by grain crop (stored for long period of time), chief can have police/guards |
Examples of early states are? | Greece, Rome, Egypt, Inka, Maya, Aztec |
What is General Reciprocity? | no record, informal, expect something back but no time limit |
